How much does a website cost for a small local business? One-off vs monthly

The build is only part of the cost. Here is what a small business website really costs once hosting, updates and the work after launch are counted, and how a monthly plan compares to a one-off project.

“How much does a website cost?” is the first question almost every local business owner asks, and the honest answer is that it depends on what you count. The build is only the first bill. A website is more like a shop than a brochure: it needs to be kept open, kept clean and kept up to date, or it slowly stops working.

This guide breaks down every cost, compares the two common ways to pay for a website, and shows what to ask before you sign anything.

What you actually pay for

Whatever the price, a business website is made of the same parts:

  • Design and build: planning the pages, designing them for phone and desktop, writing the text and setting everything up.
  • Hosting: the servers that keep the site online and fast. This is a recurring cost.
  • A domain name: your web address, renewed every year.
  • Licences and tools: the software or platform the site is built on, which is often a recurring fee.
  • Security and maintenance: updates, backups and fixes, so the site does not break or get hacked.
  • Content and updates: new services, new photos, new opening hours, new offers.
  • Search and visibility work: making sure customers can actually find the site on Google, Maps and in AI answers.

The first two or three are what people usually quote. The rest are what decide whether the website keeps bringing in customers after launch day.

Option 1: a one-off project

A traditional agency or freelancer quotes a single price to build the site. You pay a large amount upfront, wait weeks or months, and receive a finished website. It suits you if you know exactly what you need and have someone in-house who will keep it updated.

The common surprises are the costs that come afterwards: hosting and licence fees, an hourly rate every time you want a change, and a site that quietly falls behind because nobody owns it. Many owners end up paying for a redesign a few years later simply because the old site was never touched.

Option 2: a monthly plan

With a monthly plan, there is no big invoice upfront. You pay a fixed monthly fee that covers the build, hosting, licence and ongoing updates, and often the visibility work as well. It suits you if you would rather run your business than manage a website, and want it to keep improving.

The trade-off is that you are renting the service rather than buying a finished product, so it matters who you are renting from and what exactly is included. Ask whether you can leave, and what happens to your domain and content if you do.

How we price it at Fearless

We built Fearless around the monthly model. Our Core plan is €259 a month and covers a new website built and launched for you, licence and hosting, monthly updates and analytics. Our Pro plan is €399 a month and adds the work that gets you found: search visibility, AI search visibility, your Google Business Profile, competitor monitoring and a monthly report. There is no large upfront cost.

Questions to ask before you choose

  • What is included in the price, and what costs extra?
  • Who pays for hosting, the licence and the domain?
  • What does a change cost, and how quickly is it done?
  • Who looks after the site after launch?
  • Will it help me show up on Google Maps and in AI answers, or only look nice?
  • What happens if I want to stop?

So how much should you expect to pay?

Instead of asking for the lowest price, work out the total cost over three years: build, hosting, licence, updates and any redesign. Then compare it with what the site actually brings in. A website that brings in one extra job a month usually pays for itself quickly, whichever way you buy it. If you want to estimate that for your own business, our revenue calculator on the homepage gives you a rough figure in ten seconds.
